Most people know that plaque is caused by sugar from food that sits on your teeth, and that the best way to remove plaque is to brush and floss your teeth. Some people may choose to brush their teeth immediately after a meal to avoid plaque, but is this always the best idea? Your dentist might recommend waiting to brush your teeth after eating certain foods to protect your enamel.

To Brush or Not to Brush

DentistWhile your dentist is concerned about plaque, they are also concerned about the health of your enamel. Brushing your teeth immediately after eating acidic foods, like citrus fruits, tomatoes, and wine, can be too abrasive on weakened enamel. In these cases, it’s best to wait at least 30 minutes before going in with a toothbrush. Brushing your teeth too frequently can also be harmful to enamel; twice a day should be sufficient.

Protect Your Enamel

If you want to protect your enamel from acidic foods, it’s better to brush your teeth before eating and swish with water after. You should also try not to eat anything with sugar immediately after eating something acidic. The phosphoric acid in soft drinks is anything but soft on your teeth. Limit your soft drink consumption and use a fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash to help strengthen enamel. Ask your dentist how often they recommend brushing your teeth to fight plaque and avoid damage to your enamel.
