Upon determining that draperies are your window treatment of choice, the most important step in achieving the elegant and classic style of drapery decor is taking accurate measurements. The experts at Kreative Kama'aina LLC, located in Honolulu, Hawaii, offer the following guidelines:

Determining Width (A)

There are two measurements that determine the width of the drapery: 1.)  the track width and 2.) the projection of the track.

Track Width

Drapery tracks vary in size and functionality but for the purpose of measuring drapery sizes, take the measurement of the rod or track, excluding the finials. Always give the measurement from outside to outside of brackets, if using existing rods. Typically, the tracks are outside mounted 4" above the window opening and 4" beyond both sides of the window frame. This allows less light leakage and a little more privacy. Also, if the drapery treatment requires a pair or split draw, allow for an overlap in the middle of 4".

Determining Return Projection (C & D)

Measure from the wall to the face of the rod to obtain the return projection.

In a wall to wall track installation, there would be no return factors. If drapery tracks are situated with wall space on the sides of a drapery track, returns should be considered. The returns provide a finished appearance and addresses privacy issues on the sides of the drapery panels.

Determining Height (B)

Drapery heights are determined based on personal preference and the style of top and bottom hems. Typically, custom draperies are manufactured 1/4" above the floor's highest surface point. Options to puddle the drapery on the floor or hide the drapery tracks are available.
