There are many benefits to owning a home, including increased security. According to the National Crime Prevention Council, renters are 85% more likely to be burgled than homeowners. In part, this may be because few apartment complexes utilize surveillance systems or security alarms.

Larry’s Lock, Safe, & Security Center in Cincinnati, OH, provides renters, homeowners, and commercial business owners with security and peace of mind. Here, the staff outlines five things renters can do to increase their home security.

5 Ways Renters Can Boost Home Security

1. Install an Apartment Security System

Most apartment complexes don’t have video surveillance systems or security alarms, but that doesn’t mean you can’t install one for yourself. Traditional home surveillance systems require wiring and installation, and you can’t take them with you when you move. In recent years, however, some companies have developed wireless systems specifically for renters. You can choose a monitoring system or one that simply uses motion sensors to detect unusual behavior.

2. Get Renter’s Insurance

Some property managers require tenants to buy renter’s insurance. But, even if yours doesn’t, it’s wise to buy it anyway. Most policies cover your possessions in the event of burglaries, as well as vandalism, fire, and water damage. Some also offer coverage if your car is broken into, provided your vehicle was parked on the rental property grounds.

3. Reinforce Your Door Locks

If they don't install it, ask for permission to hire a locksmith to install one. Check your door hinges as well. If the hinges are outside your apartment, drill a set screw through the middle of the hinge to prevent a thief from prying it off.

4. Rent a Safe Deposit Box

If you have precious family heirlooms or sensitive personal information stored in your home, consider putting these in a safe deposit box at a local bank. Alternatively, you can also invest in a safe to keep in your home. Not only do safes protect against thievery, but they also protect your valuables in case of a fire or another disaster.

5. Know the Neighborhood

If you’re in the process of hunting for an apartment, take note of the area before making your decision. If nearby homes seem run down, or you notice graffiti on nearby fences and buildings, it could be indicative of a high-crime area. Check the crime statistics and consult with a neighborhood watch group if there is one. If you’ve already moved in, get to know your neighbors and your landlord. Your neighbors will be more likely to look out for you and your property if you get to know them.
