Now that spring is finally here, and summer’s just around the corner, it’s time to ditch the wool socks and dust off your favorite pair of sandals. If you have nail fungus or ingrown toenails, though, you may be wary of showing off your feet in public. Luckily, the friendly staff at Louise E. Tortora, DPM in Fairfield, CT, will help. They treat everything from bunions to heel pain. Below, the skilled podiatrist shares a few tips for preventing ingrown toenails all summer long.

3 Tips From a Podiatrist for Preventing Ingrown Toenails

1. Cut Your Nails With Care

Always cut your toenails in a straight line, so the top of the nail is square. Rounded edges can lead to ingrown toenails. Cutting your toenails too short can also result in ingrown toenails, so don’t get overzealous with your clippers when cutting your nails.

2. Wear Shoes That Fit Well

podiatristShoes that are too tight around the toe area can cause ingrown toenails, as can extremely tight socks that prevent you from wiggling your toes freely. Always buy footwear that fits. If you have any children, keep an eye on their footwear, as well. Teenagers and adolescents often get ingrown toenails because they don’t get new footwear following a growth spurt.

3. Avoid Toe Trauma

If you take part in activities that force your toes to the front of your shoes repeatedly, give your feet a break by wearing sandals or loose shoes immediately before and after. Sports like soccer, basketball, and football can cause toe trauma if you’re not careful.
