Seeing the water rise in the toilet bowl is enough to make any homeowner panic. Clogs are a common toilet repair issue, and learning how to properly remove them is a useful skill. To help their clients in Waynesboro, VA, remove blockages, the professionals at Cox Construction & Plumbing share five tips you can try at home.

Many clogs can be removed with the right tools and a little elbow grease. Try these steps to perform your own toilet repair.

1. Grab Your Tools

Preparing for emergencies like a clogged toilet can make the situation less stressful when it occurs. Keep a plunger and auger in the bathroom so you’re ready the next time the water rises.

2. Turn Off the Water

Before you start any toilet repairs, you must prevent the water from rising any further. Take the lid off of the tank and push down the flapper to stop water from flowing into the bowl. Next, reach around to the back of the toilet and turn off the water supply; this pipe is typically located near the base.

3. Use a Plunger

4. Try an Auger

If plunging the toilet doesn’t clear the clog, switch to an auger, also known as a snake. Run the auger through the throat of the toilet and put tension on the cable. Then, turn the auger, which will extend the cable down into the drain pipe. Once the cable reaches the obstruction, keep twisting to break up the clogged material.

5. Call a Plumber

If both a plunger and a toilet auger don’t work, call a plumber. To resolve serious or hard-to-reach clogs, they will remove the toilet to access to the drain. The plumber will use an industrial auger that is made from over 100 feet of steel cable that can extend far enough to reach the main sewage line to clear the clog.
