If you wear braces, you already know each checkup involves a tightening. During this process, minor adjustments are made to your metal bands. While this causes slight discomfort, it’s well worth it—those twists and turns will eventually shift your smile into perfect placement. However, if the soreness is too much ignore, there are simple ways to alleviate it.

Use the following four tips to make your post-tightening pain easier to bear:

  • Bring an Ice Pack: Treat your orthodontic adjustments just like you would an injury. If you’re experiencing discomfort, use an ice pack. Applying cold pressure will reduce inflammation and soreness. Be proactive—bring the pack to your appointment so it’s ready and waiting for the ride home.
  • bracesDrink Cold Water: As with an ice pack, cold water is a quick and effective way to ease discomfort and stay hydrated. Drink a full glass of ice water after your braces are tightened for a brief numbing feeling that reduces inflammation.
  • Use Numbing Gels: Numbing gels offer dramatic relief, as they desensitize the affected area completely. There are a variety available, so ask your family dentist if she recommends a particular brand. Some may be available at the office, and you can buy others over the counter. Simply use your finger to swab it on the painful area as needed.
  • Use OTC Pain Relief: There are two ways you can use OTC pain relief—proactively and retroactively. If you take medication an hour or two before your visit, the entire process will be less painful. You can also take painkillers after the appointment to avoid lingering discomfort. The pain is only temporary, so think positive and arrive prepared.
