Unless you're well-versed in the various methods of waste disposal, mixing up septic tanks and cesspools is a pretty common occurrence. There are a few notable differences between the two, however, and you will want to know more about what you're dealing with on your commercial or residential property.

Cesspool

In most cases, cesspools are standalone pits surrounded by brick, cement, or concrete blocks. A sewage inlet sends wastewater into the cesspool, after which it percolates through perforations in the walls. Without a septic tank to hold any incoming solids, however, cesspools tend to require a lot of maintenance and cleanup. If and when the surrounding drainage area becomes saturated, it may be necessary to dig additional pools for excess overflow.

Septic Tanks

septic tanksBuried septic systems are composed of two major sections: the tank itself and an area for soil absorption. When waste from a home or building enters the tank, organic solids float to the surface to form a layer of "scum," which bacteria will eventually convert to liquid form.

Inorganic or inert solids sink to the bottom to form a layer referred to as "sludge," and the clear water between the two layers overflows into the soil absorption area.

Septic tanks provide a more effective means of on-site treatment and disposal, processing sewage through the removal and storage of the aforementioned inorganic solids. While cesspools are good at storing wastewater, septic tanks work to remove pollutants, including harmful bacteria and viruses. Maintenance is still required through regular septic tank pumping, as solid material should never build up enough to overflow into the soil absorption area.

Those with septic tanks can enjoy the numerous benefits that come along with the systems, from pest reduction to improved groundwater replenishment. As long as your septic system is properly installed and maintained, you'll quickly see why septic tanks are preferable to many of the other common alternatives.
