If you’re looking for an interior flooring option that’s both durable and aesthetically pleasing, consider polished concrete. Ideal for commercial properties, as well as some industrial ones, it blends the reliability of concrete with the glossy sheen of something more decorative. But what exactly is polished concrete, and what is it used for?

Basically, polished concrete is concrete that has been more thoroughly ground down than other types. It’s also treated with a chemical agent that densifies it. The result is a surface that’s much glossier than what you would typically expect from concrete.

Polished Concrete Monroe OHDepending on the needs of the client, a flooring contractor might also dye the concrete or engrave it with an image. Although it’s not primarily used for decoration, polished concrete does have a more visually appealing quality than concrete that hasn’t undergone the polishing and chemical treatment processes.

The downside to this type of concrete is it requires more upkeep than the non-polished version, as it gets dirty fairly easily. If you’re considering installing it in a high-traffic area, make sure you’ve already made arrangements to clean it on a regular basis. It’s a durable commercial and industrial flooring option that’s best suited for retail stores, malls, some indoor parking lots, and similar applications.

It’s less well-suited for environments where it will be vulnerable to staining or damage, like factory floors. Polished concrete is also the wrong choice if you need a floor option that conforms to the USDA’s guidelines for food preparation environments.
