Tooth decay is a big deal for people of all ages, but children are particularly susceptible to cavities. Whether they’re just beginning to learn the importance of dental health or have a proclivity for sweet foods, children tend to get more fillings than adults. What you may not know, though, is that you can actually help reverse the process.

5 Ways Parents Can Prevent Cavities & Improve Their Children’s Oral Health

1. Limit Sugar Intake

Sugary drinks, candy, and starchy foods cause tooth enamel to lose mineral content and encourage tooth decay. Common knowledge states that tooth decay is nearly impossible to stop—but enamel can actually repair itself if you stop sugar intake soon enough, using nutrients absorbed by the body. If you don’t stop the tooth decay process soon enough, however, cavities will start to form.

2. Avoid Juice

Many people associate juice with healthy food. The popular beverage is made from fruit, after all, and it is frequently served to young children in little plastic cartons. But the unfortunate reality is that fruit juice often contains an enormous amount of sugar. If you want your child to eat more natural foods, give them actual fruit—but juice is not a comparable substitute.

3. Remove Plaque Regularly

When plaque forms on teeth, it eventually produces destructive acids, which break down tooth enamel. The best ways to remove it are through regular brushing, flossing, and biannual teeth cleanings at your dentist’s office.

cavities4. Supervise Teeth Brushing

Brushing another person’s teeth isn’t the easiest thing in the world. But before about the age of eight, it isn’t fair to let your child brush unattended. How can you ensure they’re brushing long enough or hitting the right areas? Instead of leaving your child alone for this important task, consider timing them and making sure they brush for the full two minutes.

5. Consider Dental Sealants

Many parents take their children to the dentist for sealants, which are thin sheaths of plastic that protect chewing surfaces of molars and other back teeth. These areas are the most susceptible to cavities because of their active role in chewing; additionally, their small grooves easily trap food and bacteria. Dentists recommend taking children around age six to get their first sealants.
