Many dentists advertise that they offer general and cosmetic dentistry services. Cosmetic dentistry is any procedure able to improve the appearance of teeth without making improvements to their overall function. It’s important to know which dental procedures are considered cosmetic, as not all insurances cover these procedures.

Below, Diane M Evans DDS, a dentist from Rush, NY, shares five of the most commonly performed cosmetic dentistry procedures:

1. Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are thin porcelain shells made of tooth-colored materials. These shells are bonded over existing teeth to improve their color, length, and overall appearance. Porcelain veneers are most often used on all front teeth, but may also be used to improve the appearance of only one tooth.

2. Teeth Whiteningcosmetic dentistry

Teeth whitening procedures are one of the most popular forms of cosmetic dentistry. During a whitening procedure, your dentist will place a gel over your teeth and then place your teeth under a special light. The combination of the specialized light and gel can make your teeth appear several shades whiter within a few hours.

3. Dental Crowns

A dental crown is a small cap placed over an existing damaged or broken tooth. The cap resembles a real tooth and can be used to improve the size, shape, or color of the tooth. Depending on the condition of your teeth, your dentist can make your crown temporary or permanent.

4. Bridges

Dental bridges are similar to crowns and are used to improve the appearance of multiple missing, damaged, or broken teeth. A dental bridge adheres to the existing teeth and gums, providing a permanent solution for missing and damaged teeth.

5. Dental Implants

Dental implants are prosthetic teeth that are surgically implanted in the jaw. A titanium support cylinder or screw is placed into the jaw bone. Once the titanium screw is successfully fused to the bone, a prosthetic tooth is placed over the screw. Dental implants are permanent and can be used to replace one or more missing or decayed teeth.
