If you have a curious pet — most likely a dog — that likes to get friendly with the local wildlife, they may try to approach the wrong animal, such as a skunk. Skunk spray is notoriously pungent and difficult to remove, but luckily, there are remedies to eliminate the smell. Here, the veterinary professionals of Alexandria Pike Animal Hospital in Southgate, KY, share their tips for nixing that skunk stink.

Vet Hospital Gives 5 Tips for De-Skunking Your Pet

1. Attend to Your Pet’s Eyes

The first thing you want to do when your pet gets sprayed is check their eyes. If there is redness, flush them out with cool water immediately. If irritation persists, a trip to the vet hospital may be needed.

2. Keep Your Pet Outside

Make sure Fido or Fluffy is kept outside after the spray. You don’t want your pet lying on the rug or furniture, spreading that scent wherever they go!

The days of tomato sauce baths are over. For a less messy DIY remedy, mix one quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, one-quarter cup of baking soda, and one teaspoon of liquid dish soap. If you don’t have these ingredients, use vinegar diluted with water. There are also over-the-counter products you can keep on hand in case of an emergency. Do not keep the homemade mixture for future use, as the ingredients can react poorly when stored.

4. Do the De-Stinking

Put on a pair of rubber gloves and wash your pet down with the solution. Rub the mixture into the fur, but don’t leave it on for too long. After about 10 minutes, rinse the solution off thoroughly.

5. Finish Off With a Shampoo

Finally, shampoo your dog. This will get rid of the last of the de-skunking mixture and give them a sweet smell. Last but not least, dry your animal off with some extra tender loving care!
