According to an article recently published in the Alaska Dispatch News (ADN), the Alaskan seafood industry is facing a new challenge — genetically modified salmon. Known as “Frankenfish,” within the fishing industry, this genetically engineered fish will soon hit the shelves packaged as farm-raised salmon, but you won’t find a GMO label anywhere on the product.

Rather than unknowingly eating this fish, Alaska Sausage & Seafood in Anchorage, Alaska, urges North American consumers to choose fresh, wild-caught Alaskan salmon from the waters of the Pacific.

The next time that you’re in the supermarket, and you’re debating between wild Alaskan seafood or farm-raised, check out these reasons to go for the former:

  • Enjoy Health Benefits: You’ve probably read articles stating that the living conditions found on fish farms are sub-par when compared to the environment needed for salmon to develop properly. According to Prevention.com, wild salmon has less fat than farm-raised salmon, and it’s filled with many more nutrients and minerals.
  • Support Local Economies: Big salmon farms in the Atlantic have always been a threat to the Alaskan seafood industry. When you opt out of farm-raised, you’re putting money into the pockets of American fishers, as well as the State of Alaska and seafood distributors like Alaska Sausage & Seafood.
  • Eat Sustainable: By choosing only to eat wild Alaskan salmon, you’re making a commitment to live a more sustainable life. This means you know exactly where your food comes from — the vast, open waters off the coast of The Last Frontier.

To enjoy the benefit of eating salmon, always choose fresh-caught, wild Alaskan seafood sold by local vendors.
