Part of keeping your vehicle in good working condition is learning the signs of a faulty transmission. Never ignore the warning signs that your transmission or any other vehicle component requires repair, as this can lead to expensive replacements, accidents, and other serious problems.

Take your car to a local auto repair shop as soon as you notice any of these warning signs:

  • Shaking Gear Shifts: Shaking or jerking gear shifts could mean low transmission fluid levels, among other problems. Schedule repair as soon as possible if you notice hesitation when you put the vehicle into gear, jerking motions when shifting gears, or any similar issues.

  • transmissionBurning Fluid Odor: The acrid odor of burning rubber is a sure sign of a transmission issue. The cause of the smell may be due to transmission fluid leaking onto engine components or dirty fluid that is causing damage to the system.

  • Slipping Gears: Slipping into a different gear while on the road is another reason for transmission repair. This problem is more common with automatic transmissions and may be accompanied by a whining noise. The transmission could be failing to fully power your engine’s internal combustion.

  • Cloudy Fluid: Your transmission fluid should look bright red in color and feature a “sweet” scent. Replace cloudy, burnt-looking, dark, or opaque fluid to avoid further problems, especially when coupled with a burnt odor.

  • Unusual Sounds: Whining, buzzing, and clunking sounds are usually indicative of a transmission problem. Excessive noise when your vehicle is in neutral is also symptomatic of a transmission issue. Odd noises do not always mean the transmission is faulty; however, unusual sounds are always a good reason to visit your local auto repair shop.
