When it’s cold outside, the last thing you want is to run your heater and have all of its warmth seep out through your home’s windows. While installing replacement windows is a good idea if your current panes are not energy efficient, Economy Glass & Window of Cincinnati, OH, would like you to know there are further steps you should take to reduce the heat loss.

3 Tips to Fully Reduce Heat Loss After Installing Your Replacement Windows

1. Hang Curtains or BlindsReplacement Windows

When you add curtains or blinds to your windows, it creates an insulating layer of still air on the inside of the glass. Just make sure that the curtains or blinds that you choose are thick and closely woven. They should also fit snugly on both sides and the top of the window to prevent warm air from moving behind the curtain and cooling the area.

2. Add a Pelmet Above Your Curtains

A pelmet is a solid fixture—usually made of plywood—placed above curtains to hide the rod, but also used to help insulate the window by preventing convection currents.

3. Seal & Caulk Cracks

A typical window replacement will involve caulking around the exterior trim of the window and sealing parts of the interior. However, if your windows have been installed for a while, it might be a good idea to check for deteriorating caulking, rotting wood, and cracked glass that could be letting warm air escape. The next time it’s warmer than 45 degrees, dig out the old caulk, clean the area, and apply a new caulk to seal up your windows.
