REI is more than an outdoor equipment store. They’re also a co-op that advocates for the outdoors as well as the people who play there. How do they accomplish this feat, you ask? Let their diverse team explain.
In their day-to-day operations, REI works by the belief of “purpose above profits.” In fact, throughout the year, they give back nearly 70% of their profits to a variety of causes. For example, they use the profit from their cycling and camping equipment to support both their staff and co-op members, inspiring them to share their passion for nature with others. In 2016, they contributed $6.9 million to their non-profit partners to fund projects that protect and improve our environment.
