Stainless steel sinks have been a mainstay in American kitchens for years. Long-lasting and attractive, they go with any decor. Of course, we at The Plumbing Source have installed hundreds if not thousands of sinks over the years as a result of repairs, or, more commonly, kitchen remodeling. One question that frequently comes up is this: How should I clean my stainless steel sink so it will look great throughout its entire lifetime?

For answers, we turned to the folks at Elkay Sinks. Elkay is one of the premium brands we carry, and they offer an incredible variety of stainless steel sinks that include single-, double- and triple-basin configurations. They even makes stainless steel holders for sponges, wash cloths and bar soaps that attach magnetically to the side of the sink. The sink and accessory selection consumers have is amazing.

Here is what the experts at Elkay have to say about cleaning your sink.

In general, you can use regular mild detergent and a soft cloth. Rinse and towel it dry for that showroom new look. You never want to use those steel soap pads. Those leave tiny steel particles behind that will sooner or later rust.

Elkay recommends you ditch your dish mat. It can trap soap and dirt underneath it and make your cleaning more difficult. Use an Elkay bottom grid or rinse basket instead.

Don't worry about light scratches – they are normal. Over time they will blend into the finish and you won't even notice them.

Finally, try to avoid storing your household cleaners and chemicals that contain chloride bleach, acid, and drain and toilet bowl cleaners under the sink. Vapor emissions can cause corrosion and pitting to the sink and water lines.
