What Is Annie’s Law?

The ultimate goal of Annie’s Law is to prevent drunk driving collisions. Legislators are aiming to do that by increasing the penalties associated with DUI convictions. As of April 6, 2017, the look-back period for prior DUI convictions will be extended. Additionally, there will be longer minimum license suspensions, but first-time offenders will be able to get their license reinstated sooner if they install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle.

What Will the New Look-Back Period Be?

Under current law, the look-back period in Ohio for prior DUI convictions is six years. Once Annie’s Law goes into effect, the look-back period will increase to 10 years.

How Will Annie’s Law Affect First-Time Offenders?

Annie’s Law will increase the mandatory minimum license suspension for first-time DUI offenders from six months to 12 months. However, offenders will have the opportunity to apply for unlimited driving privileges in certain scenarios if they install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle.

Are There Mandatory Jail Sentences Under Annie’s Law?

If a first-time offender is eligible for unlimited driving privileges by installing an ignition interlock devise, there will be no mandatory jail term.
