There are many insects that love to take up residence in your home, but few are as pesky as ants. Their sheer numbers make controlling them a difficult task without the help of an experienced exterminator. Select Pest Control has helped residents in the Cincinnati area keep pests out of their homes for over 30 years, and their team has put together a few tips to help you keep ants outside.

ExterminatorSeal Cracks Around Windows & Doors

Since ants are so small, they’re able to get into your home through even the tiniest opening. Many homeowners find that ants sneak inside through cracks around their windows or their door frames. Seal these cracks with caulk to keep ants out, and call an exterminator to take care of any large ant colonies outside.

Use Double-Sided Tape

If any ants do make it through, a layer of double-sided tape in front of the entry point will keep them from invading your home. The tape is sticky enough to trap ants when they try to crawl along your windowsill. Just be sure the tape is flush against the ground. Otherwise, ants may be able to crawl under it.

Spray Essential Oils

Ants are attracted to your kitchen by smell. Luckily, there are some scents that ants don’t like. Spread peppermint oil along their preferred entry points or create a barrier using cayenne, cinnamon, or black pepper. These substances deter ants without the use of poisons or messy powders.

Spread Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous earth is a great way to keep ants from entering your home. Spread a small layer outside, in front of their favored entry points. As ants walk across the powder, the diatomaceous earth pulls moisture from their bodies, killing them without pesticide. This powder is incredibly messy and difficult to clean up, so it’s best to use it outside rather than indoors.

While these tips will help prevent ants, it’s important to call an exterminator if you notice a large colony trying to make their way into your home.
