  I'll bet you thought there were two.  It is true that most cases are filed under the two "consumer" chapters (7 or 13), but, in case you are curious, there are six.  Here they are:

  • Chapter 7 simply applies for a discharge of dischargeable debts,
  • Chapter 9 is to adjust the debts of a municipality,
  • Chapter 11 is a very complex restructuring of secured debts, often resulting in partial payment and partial discharge of unsecured debts,
  • Chapter 12 is a simplified chapter11, tailored for farmers and fishermen,
  • Chapter 13 involves an adjustment of debts, an affordable payment plan of three to five years, and usually a discharge of the debts that did not get paid through the plan, and
  • Chapter 15 is for ancillary and cross-border cases.
