Fluoride is an important mineral for children because it strengthens their tooth enamel and helps their teeth resist plaque and acid damage. Although there’s fluoride in your tap water, family dentists say this really isn’t enough. Here, the team at High Point Smile Dentistry in the Piedmont Triad region answers some common questions parents have about fluoride and kids’ oral health.

Family Dentists Answer FAQs About Kids’ Teeth & Fluoride

1. What Does Fluoride Do?

Fluoride protects the teeth through a process called remineralization. The fluoride you get from food, water, and dental products coats the tooth’s surface and helps repair weakened enamel. It also protects the teeth from demineralization caused by acid-producing bacteria in the mouth.

2. Why Do Children Need Fluoride?

Baby teeth may be temporary, but they play a critical role. They are considered an child’s “practice teeth” until the permanent ones emerge. Baby teeth promote proper chewing of food, which is essential for nutritious eating. Introducing fluoride as early as possible can help prevent cavities and gum problems.

3. Is Fluoridated Water Safe for Children?

family dentistAccording to the American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), fluoride is safe, and it works. In fact, research has shown it prevents tooth decay in both adults and children by at least 25%. Make sure your child is getting enough fluoride by having your primary water source evaluated.

4. How Else Can My Child Get Fluoride?

Apart from fluoridated water, toothpaste is the next most common source of fluoride. It can also be found in many foods and beverages. Children below the age of three should use no more than a smear of toothpaste. Children ages three to six should use about a pea-sized amount. Your family dentist may also recommend a topical fluoride treatment.
