Geophysics is the science of studying the physics of the Earth, the oceans, and the atmosphere. As such a broad topic, it may be difficult to understand what that really means and exactly what geoscientists can do. To help you gain a better understanding, the geoscientists at GeoTek Alaska in Anchorage describe a few of the innovative geophysical services they offer and the many benefits they provide.

Below are just a few of the geophysical services geoscientists can provide:

  • Magnetometer Surveys: Geoscientists can use these types of surveys to measure and detect any variations in the Earth’s magnetic field. These highly sensitive instruments are able to detect large steel objects such as tanks, drums, and reinforced concrete foundations with minimal invasion to the land. Magnetometer surveys are also useful in archaeological and forensic investigations.
  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR): This relatively new geoscientistgeophysical service is great for shallow areas and arctic environments. By using high frequency electromagnetic waves, geoscientists are able to detect what is below the surface—again, with minimal invasion and less need for destructive drilling. GPR can be used to investigate soil lithology and depth, as well as to conduct groundwater investigation.
  • Seismic Refraction:  Geoscientists use seismic waves to investigate subsurface conditions, measure bedrock depth, and determine the depth of the groundwater. This can make it easier to locate the groundwater for sampling. While other methods may be able to provide the same results, seismic refraction is able to achieve these goals in a much faster, cost-efficient manner.
