The healthcare needs of women are different from those of men, especially as they age. Since many conditions affect women without manifesting symptoms during the early stages, regular health screenings with an OB/GYN are critical. If you cannot remember the last time you went to an OB/GYN, chances are you’re overdue for a visit.

According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, women should generally see their OB/GYN at least once a year for a well-woman visit. Women with reproductive health concerns may need to visit their doctor more frequently, as well as women who are pregnant or trying to conceive. You should also visit your doctor if you experience abnormal bleeding or discharge, pain or discomfort in the pelvic region, or changes in menstruation.

ob/gynA woman’s age and medical history will ultimately determine what screenings and tests she needs at her annual visits. During exams, all patients over the age of 21 will receive a thorough pelvic examination annually, but some may not get a Pap smear at each appointment. The Office on Women’s Health recommends that women in their twenties should get a Pap test every three years. Women between 30 and 64 should get a Pap smear and an HPV test every five years, or a solo Pap test every three years. Some women may need Pap testing more frequently, while others may not need it as often. Your OB/GYN can make a recommendation.
