Sod allows you to grow a beautiful, mature lawn with complete, uniform coverage in one month or less. After it has been fully established, a sodded lawn is easier to manage and can provide vegetation more successfully than a lawn grown using grass seeding. Before it can become established, though, newly-lain sod needs to be cared for in a specific way.

Read on below for tips on caring for your lawn after sod installation.

3 Useful Tips for Sod Installation Care

1. Water Your Lawn Frequently

During the first few weeks after your sod is installed, it is important to water your lawn frequently and sufficiently to ensure that the roots take hold. For the first 10 days, you should be watering your lawn two to three times a day for at least five minutes until the first few inches of soil feel soaked. For the next 10 days, reduce watering to only once a day, until the top quarter inch of soil is soaked. By the third week, you should be watering every other day, soaking the top half inch of soil. By week four, you should only water your lawn twice a week.

2. Wait a Week to Mow

3. Keep Foot Traffic to a Minimum

Any physical disturbance in the first few weeks can inhibit your sod’s ability to establish roots. You can promote a healthy lawn by not allowing any foot traffic over the newly lain sod for the first week after installation. In the following three to four weeks, foot traffic should be kept to a minimum to avoid treading on the new grass.
