Planning a funeral for a loved one is always a difficult time. When you visit the funeral home where your family member’s service will be held, you are likely already overwhelmed, with emotions running close to the surface. To help make the process a little easier, Adzima Funeral Home in Stratford, CT, recommends bringing the following documents when you come to make arrangements.

Bring a photo the the funeral home to accompany your loved one's obituary.A Picture

First, choose a photograph of your loved one to accompany their obituary on the funeral home’s website and in the newspaper. A tasteful portrait is the most common choice, or you and your family may agree upon another photograph that encapsulates your loved one’s personality. Make sure the photograph is an adequate size and resolution; a small or grainy photo will not look good once it has been published.

Legal Documents

Next, gather legal documents such as birth certificates, social security cards, marriage licenses, and any military records, including discharge forms. As part of the process, the funeral home will need to confirm you loved one’s identity, full name, date of birth, parents’ names and birthplaces, and any military service. The funeral staff will also want to know about your loved one’s schools and employers, so any records of their work history and education are also appreciated.

Funeral Planning Paperwork

Any documentation directly related to you loved one’s funeral is essential. If they have made prior arrangements with the funeral home, bring the prearrangement paperwork and any wishes your loved one left for the funeral. Have the cemetery paperwork completed and bring it to the funeral home as well. If there are any relevant insurance policies, such as a life insurance policy being used to cover funeral costs, bring proof of the policy and its terms.

During this challenging time, the arrangements will go more smoothly if you are properly prepared. If you have any questions or are worried you’ve forgotten something, call Adzima Funeral Home at 203-375-2200 prior to your visit, or contact them online.
