Child Care Services

Kids are more susceptible to catching the common cold or the flu than adults. Like adults, they spend much of the winter confined to indoor spaces, but they are far less concerned about spreading germs. If you send your child to child care services, such as a day care center or preschool, they may be at a greater risk for contracting the flu.

Fortunately, there are plenty of things you can do to help keep your child healthy during this cold & flu season:

  • Get the Flu Shot: Both you and your child should get the flu shot each year as soon as it becomes available. This will protect your toddler or preschooler from catching the flu at day care.
  • Use Antibacterial Soap: If your child doesn’t already know, teach them how to properly wash their hands. In addition to teaching the proper technique, have antibacterial soap at all your sinks at home. This will kill germs—even if your toddler isn’t as thorough as they should be.
  • Cover Their Mouths: Teach your child to cover their mouth with the crook of their arm when they cough or sneeze. This will prevent them from spreading germs to other kids at their child care service. They may even teach their friends to do the same.
  • Eat Well-Balanced Meals: Whether they’re eating at home with you or getting lunch at preschool, make sure they are consuming a well-balanced meal. A diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables—especially those high in vitamin C—will go a long way in keeping your child healthy.
  • Get Some Rest: If your toddler or preschooler does start to show signs of the cold or flu, make sure they get some quality rest. Getting enough sleep early on can shorten the lifespan of the virus. Take them to the doctor if they are sick for an extended period of time or have a fever.
