Fluoride is a natural mineral that research has shown not only prevents cavities in children and adults, but also helps repair the early stages of tooth decay even before the decay is visible.

Fluoride is obtained in 2 forms:

  • Topical – may be found in toothpastes, mouth rinses and fluoride applied in the dental office.
  • Systemic – fluoride that is swallowed; may include fluoridated water and dietary supplements, such as drops/tablets or lozenges.

There are a lot of common misconceptions about fluoride. Some of the more common ones we hear include:

  • Myth: Fluoride isn’t safe.
    • Fact: Over 60 years of research and experience have shown that optimal levels of fluoridated water do not harm people or the environment.
  • Myth: Fluoride causes cancer.
    • Fact: The National Cancer Institute asserts that there is no association between fluoride and cancer. Years of data support the safe use of fluoride. The CDC named fluoridated water as one of the top 10 greatest public health achievements of the 20th century.
  • Myth: We don’t need fluoride in drinking water because it’s in toothpaste.
    • Fact: Toothpaste alone is insufficient, which is why dentists and pediatricians often prescribe fluoride tablets to children living in non-fluoridated areas.

Fluoride works by making tooth enamel more resistant to the acid that causes tooth decay and is recommended for both children and adults. Your dentist may recommend you to have a fluoride treatment at your preventative care appointments to help strengthen your teeth. Make sure to visit the dentist every 6 months for check ups to help keep your teeth healthy and happy!
