OB/GYNs perform both hysterectomies and hysteroscopies. While many women have heard of these procedures before, some remain unenlightened regarding the specifics. In fact, since these terms sound so similar, some patients accidentally mix them up. Fortunately, the health care experts at Women’s Clinic of Lincoln, P.C. in Nebraska have explained below what you need to know about these important medical procedures.

Women’s Health Care Lesson: Hysterectomies Vs. Hysteroscopies

Hysterectomies

A hysterectomy involves removing part of or the entire uterus. OB/GYNs employ a variety of techniques for this procedure, which may vary due to the reason for the surgery, as well as the woman’s age. Often, women undergo this procedure due to conditions such as uterine fibroids or prolapse, or ovarian, uterine, or cervical cancer. Other reasons include endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, and abnormal bleeding. After the procedure, a woman becomes infertile.women's health care

Hysteroscopies

A hysteroscopy involves inserting a hysteroscope, which is a tiny tube equipped with a micro-sized scope, into the uterus through the vagina. Through the scope, the uterine lining can be closely examined. This procedure is often conducted to help diagnose infertility, bleeding, cramping, recurring miscarriage, or endometrial cancer. As such, a hysteroscopy might signal the need for a hysterectomy. These scopes may also be used to help remove small polyps and fibroids, or place or remove an intrauterine device.

Hysteroscopies, like hysterectomies, are another way to perform tubal sterilization. This non-surgical procedure inserts permanent microinserts into the Fallopian tubes. It can be conducted under local or general anesthesia right in the office. Afterward, sexual activity should be avoided for about a week, but all other physical activities are permitted. Patients must use alternative contraception for three months following the procedure to ensure it was successful.
