Gum disease is caused by a build-up of plaque between the teeth. Plaque contains bacteria, which can cause the gums to become inflamed. If left untreated, gum disease can be detrimental to your teeth and oral health as well as general physical health. Getting regular teeth cleanings from your dentist removes plaque and helps prevent gum disease. Brian Perelmuter, DMD, P.C., in Naugatuck, CT, provides general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry services, including crowns, bridges, tooth whitening, and more.

What is Gum Disease?

Also known as periodontal disease, gum disease is the inflammation of the gums resulting from a build-up of bacteria-containing plaque between the teeth and gums. If left untreated, this can lead to tooth and gum decay. It can also lead to more serious health problems such as diabetes and heart disease.

How Do Teeth Cleanings Help?

Plaque is a soft coating that forms between the teeth and feeds on the sugars in the food you eat. When you get a cleaning from your dentist, the hygienist will use a thin metal scraper to remove plaque between and around teeth. Most people get teeth cleanings once or twice per year, but if you have periodontal disease or are at risk for periodontal disease (tobacco products increase your risk), you may need to visit your dentist or periodontist more often.

Regularly flossing is the best way to keep plaque at bay. If you brush and floss twice a day and use a plaque-fighting mouthwash, you should be in good shape for your next teeth cleaning.

When you don’t take measures to fight plaque by flossing or visiting the dentist, you’re putting yourself at risk for gum disease and tooth decay, which may require a root canal or tooth extraction.
