When choosing the type of swimming pool you want to be installed in your backyard, the first thing you’ll want to consider is how it will satisfy your budget and your personal preferences. But your choice will also determine the amount of pool maintenance you have to put in—including how you’ll filter the water through the use of pool pumps.

What Are Pool Pumps?

Pool pumps are small electrical motors that circulate water using an impeller. Water is directed through a filter, where it is cleaned and returned to the pool.

If you are looking for a relatively cheap and easy swimming pool to set up, an above-ground pool can be a great option. Using a kit, consumers or installers can set up a swimming pool frame, attach a vinyl liner, and fill it with water. While above-ground pools are a small—and sometimes temporary—option, they still require the use of pool pumps for effective filtration. Above-ground pool pumps usually come combined with a filter, making installation a little bit easier. Since the volume of water is less than in other swimming pools, the pool pump doesn’t have to be on for very long.

In-ground fiberglass pools are a solid option if you prefer a long-lasting, low-maintenance option. They are constructed by placing a pre-fabricated fiberglass shell into the ground, usually encased in concrete. Plumbing is partially installed before the shell is laid in and completed after it is set. Since these pools are bigger, you will likely need to choose a larger pool pump that can handle a higher capacity than an above-ground pool and run it for a longer period.

While they are certainly some of the most expensive options, gunite swimming pools are preferred by consumers who want to create a custom shape. Like a fiberglass pool, these models are formed in the ground. However, these swimming pools are more labor-intensive, as they require the installation of a rebar structure, which is then sprayed with a mixture of sand and cement known as gunite. These typically use large pool pumps as well.

Once your pool is installed and your pool pump is in place, you’ll want to regularly clean and maintain it. If it becomes clogged, for example, the filtration flow can suffer—and you may even have to invest in electric motor repair or replacement.
