If you have chipped a tooth, you may find yourself wondering if this is something you should be worried about. Is it simply a cosmetic concern, or do you need to see a dentist right away? Neil W. Carmony, D.D.S. of Texarkana, AR, has seen many broken and chipped teeth, and he has great advice for assessing your tooth damage and responding appropriately. Here, he’ll advise you on what you should know as you determine whether your chipped tooth is a major or minor issue:

Small Chips

In most cases, you can wait until your next scheduled appointment with a dentist to discuss repairing the chip. You can also make an appointment with your dentist if the chip is on a front tooth and you are self-conscious about it. However, a small chip is not considered to be an emergency situation. The exception to this rule is if you begin to experience pain. If you experience pain, you will want to schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

Large Chips

Large chips in your tooth do qualify as dental emergencies. If you have chipped a large portion of your tooth, you will want to save any fragments of the tooth that you can. If you can salvage the chipped tooth and see a dentist right away, they may be able to bond the portion back in place. Teeth with sharp edges will also need to be assessed by your dentist as they can damage the inside of your mouth.

In general, the size of your chipped tooth and the presence of pain will determine how concerned you should be about it. To find out more about what to do about your chipped tooth, call Neil W.
