Air conditioning is crucial to get through hot New Mexico summers. No matter how warm it gets outside, your home will stay cool and provide you comfort. But how does the system work? To answer this question, the HVAC experts at Glorieta Creek Mechanical in Santa Fe have put together a handy guide to the inner workings of your air conditioner.

How Your Air Conditioning Works

Hot Air In

air conditioningWhen your thermostat senses the temperature in your home has risen above an acceptable range, it engages your air conditioner. Your AC uses fans and ducts to draw the warm air from your home into the unit so it can begin cooling.

Hot Air Cooled

Once the hot air is in the air conditioning unit, it passes over coils filled with a cooling agent like freon. These coils cool the air within the unit. The air conditioner also works to push warm air out of the building via the part of the unit installed outside.

Cold Air Pushed Out

Once the air is cooled, it is pushed out of the unit through fans and ducts and recirculated into your home. This process continues until your thermostat registers the temperature of your home as acceptable.

For your air conditioner to work properly, have it regularly serviced, especially before the hotter months hit. While your air conditioner is running regularly, check its filters every month to make sure they don’t need cleaning or replacing.
