Hey, did you know the saliva of healthy people excretes compounds which gives them protection by balancing the pH (usually decreasing the acid levels) of their mouth. According to the Journal of Dental Research, folks born with cleft lip or palate, since that has a genetic cause, also have compromises to the buffering actions to their saliva.

Well, here at Teresa WadeDDS-Family Dentistry we love children in our dental office; happy kids are one of our greatest joys. So we want to do everything we can to keep kids healthy and cavity free. We call those cavities “sugar bugs” and kids can help keep their saliva less acidic by avoiding candy and carbonated drinks (because of the drink’s acidic pH). Substituting fruit or vegetables for candy and milk, water, or natural juices can help.

That being said, we do know the simple fact is we actually love people of all ages, here at our office. That means, since we know salivary glands supply buffering and protectives agents, which decreases cavities, and sometimes when medications and/or certain diseases lower the amount of saliva produced the result will be an increase it dental cavities.

For this reason, it becomes very important to decrease sugar consumed in any form (mints, gum,...) and avoid carbonated drinks because of their lower pH. Instead, to stimulate saliva, utilize water and products designed to assist patients with saliva shortages.

We want to help you. We look forward to seeing you and hearing about your successes in keeping care of your beautiful teeth at your next dental care appointment.

See you soon! Remember to be safe and skip sugar & carbonated drinks.
