When you’re pregnant, your health is of utmost importance. After all, you’re eating, moving, and breathing for two! Eating healthy foods, exercising, and getting plenty of sleep are all good ways to care for yourself and your baby, but there’s something you may be forgetting: the importance of daily dental care. The staff at Lowitz & Meier, a family dentistry practice located in Cincinnati, OH, has some advice for expecting moms.

Here are some tips to help you care for your teeth and gums:

  • The First Trimester: Tell your dentist office that you are expecting, and call your insurance company to find out if you receive any extra cleanings or dental care during your pregnancy. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and bland toothpaste, in case you’re dealing with any nausea; if you do vomit, rinse your mouth out immediately afterward. Since hormone levels change during this time, some women may experience puffy and bleeding gums—but don’t worry; this is called pregnancy gingivitis and it is normal.
  • dental-care-family-dentistry-pregnancySecond Trimester: Pregnancy cravings are tough, but try to avoid sugary snacks and beverages. Teeth whitening is not a good idea during this time. Stay committed to eating a healthy diet—with foods high in vitamin C, calcium, and B12—to maintain strong teeth.
  • Third Trimester: You’re almost there! Keep up your daily dental care routine of brushing and flossing. Don’t schedule any dental treatments in the last six weeks of your pregnancy, but make an appointment for a teeth cleaning after your due date.

Pregnancy is an exciting and challenging time for women, and daily dental care is an important part of the process. If you have any additional questions about your oral health, contact Lowitz & Meier, Cincinnati’s premier family dentistry practice.
