Without a working refrigerant, air conditioners are not able to produce and distribute cool air. Since some of the regulations regarding refrigerants have shifted in recent years, it’s important to stay up to date with the recommended products. To properly maintain your HVAC equipment, it also helps to understand some of the basics about refrigerants.

refrigerantAir conditioner systems work by storing refrigerants within copper coils. Using internal fans and other mechanisms, the refrigerant undergoes a series of state changes from gas to liquid and back to gas, absorbing outside heat and eventually turning cool. For a long time, the most common refrigerant was R-22, but because of studies linking it to climate change, the Environmental Protection Agency is having owners conduct a refrigerant changeover by the year 2020 to install more environmentally friendly options.

Since refrigerants are not safe to handle unless you’re fully aware of safety procedures, it’s wise to let an HVAC equipment expert administer the changeover. The first step is the transfer of the R-22 into an external container where it will be weighed. From there, the technicians will examine the system for problems and leaks.

After making any necessary adjustments, they will charge the system with a replacement refrigerant such as MO99 or R-438A. The team will take into account the weight of the R-22 as they gauge how much to insert. Finally, they’ll check the oil level to make sure there is enough lubricant.
