If you have a new concrete slab on your property, whether it’s a part of a patio, or driveway, or some other feature, it’s important to care for it properly. If you don’t, you run the risk of cutting the life of your investment short. Fortunately, the pros at Childers Concrete Co. in High Point, NC, have put together a handy guide for maintaining your concrete so it lasts for years to come.

Caring for Your Concrete Slab

Clean It

concrete slabFirst, you need to clean the concrete thoroughly. Remove furniture and debris, and sweep the surface. Then, mix dish soap and water in a bucket and use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub the concrete until it’s clean. Use a garden hose to rinse off the soap and give it a final inspection. If the space is too large to clean with just a brush, use a power washer instead to remove dirt and stains.

Seal It

Seal your concrete every two to three years, depending on your use. When you go to the hardware store, you should get roughly five gallons of sealant for every 1,000 square feet of concrete. A concrete contractor can also handle this task.

Apply Anti-Skid

For an additional layer of protection against skid marks, use an anti-skid solution along with your sealant. You should add one jar of anti-skid for every five gallons of sealer. Apply your first coat with a one-inch nap roller and allow it to dry while keeping it clear of debris. Then, apply a second coat. Make sure your concrete is completely dry before using.
