Whether a key is misplaced or you need a copy of them, sometimes it’s necessary to duplicate keys. The process of duplication, however, can be somewhat stymied by any message that explicitly states “Do Not Copy” on a key. While this measure is put in place for safety and security reasons, there are situations in which a “Do Not Copy” key can be duplicated. Able Security Locksmiths has been providing residential and commercial locksmith services to residents of Morris, Sussex, and Warren Counties for more than 25 years and understands the steps that need to be taken to have a “Do Not Copy” key duplicated.

locksmithNo matter the reason a “Do Not Copy” key needs to be duplicated, a locksmith needs certain forms of authorization for the job to be done. At the time of duplication, an official letter of permission is required from the supervisor or owner. This letter must be on official company letterhead and explicitly name the keys to be duplicated, the number of keys to be copied, the person picking up the keys that are duplicated, and the name and phone number of the person who wrote the authorization letter.

If all of the elements of the authorization letter are in order when the locksmith receives it, the person picking up the keys will also need to fill out a “Request for Restricted Keys” form. All of these steps are done to ensure no “Do Not Copy” key is duplicated without knowledge and permission of the owner. It should be noted, however, that any locksmith reserves the right to refuse key duplication of any “Do Not Copy” key.

So, contrary to its message, a “Do Not Copy” key can, in fact, be duplicated if handled in the proper manner. If you have a key that needs to be duplicated for use in the areas of Morris, Sussex, and Warren Counties, the experience and craftsmanship of Able Security Locksmiths shouldn’t be overlooked.
