As the temperatures continue to drop during the colder months, it’s important to have a reliable heating system. While many people opt for the traditional furnace to keep their homes warm, heat pumps are the perfect choice for an energy efficient alternative to save money and keep comfortable during the winter and summer seasons.

Understanding the Basics of a Heat Pump

How Many Different Types of Heat Pumps?

There are three types of heat pumps: air-to-air, water source, and geothermal.  Simply put, they collect heat from the air, water, or ground outside to heat or cool the inside.  Of the three, the air-source heat pump (ASHP) is most commonly chosen and easier to install.

Are Heat Pumps Worth the Investment or Is it All Hype?

Heat pumps have come a long way since the early models back in the 1970’s and 80’s.  They now offer various degrees of efficiency, capacity, and technology options.  A heat pump can reduce your electricity use for heat pumpheating by approximately 50% compared to electric resistance heating.  Some models have variable-speed motors on their indoor fans (blower), outdoor fans, or both.  The variable-speed controls for these fans keep the air moving, minimizing cool drafts and maximizing electrical savings.  Also, higher efficiency heat pumps dehumidify better than standard air conditioners when providing cooling comfort in the summer months.

Why is Supplemental Heat Needed With a Heat Pump?

Air source heat pumps use heat from outside air and when temperatures drop below 32 degrees, supplementary heat is often needed.  Usually referred to as Auxiliary Heat/Emergency Heat.  With Aux Heat, the thermostat senses the need and automatically turns on the electric heat strips to provide the additional heat needed.  It indicates and informs the use of the heat strips.  Emergency Heat is selected on the t-stat to manually turn off the heat pump and only run the AUX Heat.  It’s best to select this when the heat pump is not working to limit any additional damage to the unit

How Long Does It Take to Install a Heat Pump?

Installation of an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) is usually completed in one day.  An extra day may be necessary if more than one unit is required or if a new furnace/air handler is being installed too.
