While enjoying the pleasant weather, your dog might encounter a few creatures that won’t enjoy their company—namely, a wandering skunk. The Connecticut animal control experts at American Bio-Tech know run-ins with skunks are often unexpected, which is why they offer the following tips to deal with skunk spray.

What to Do When Your Dog Gets Sprayed

  • Flush out the Eyes: Skunks spray indiscriminately, which means your furry companion might get some of the oily secretion in his eyes. If this happens, flush out the area immediately with clean water. Don't let the dog rub his eyes, and if you notice prolonged irritation, make an appointment with your veterinarian.
  • animal-controlFollow This Recipe: If your dog gets skunked, keep him outside. In a bucket, mix one quart of hydrogen peroxide, ½ cup of baking soda, and one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. The hydrogen peroxide and baking soda will remove the smell, while the soap will break down the oily residue.
  • Wash Your Dog: Wearing old clothes and a pair of rubber gloves, gently work the mixture through your dog’s fur, avoiding any areas with open cuts. Wait five minutes for the solution to set, and then rinse off with a hose. When you’re finished, discard whatever soap is left in the bucket.
  • Prevent Future Exposures: If there’s a skunk living on your property, this probably won't be the last time your dog gets sprayed. To prevent future encounters, call an animal control specialist to safely remove the skunk and relocate it away from humans.
