Happy hour is an American tradition. And yet, many people don’t know how it started.

The History Of Happy Hour, An American Workforce Tradition

These days, the words “happy hour” refer to a period of time when a bar or restaurant offers special deals on drinks and food to help guests celebrate the end of the work day or work week. However, the term didn’t originally come from the restaurant business. Most experts agree it originated in the United States Navy. Happy hour was the time set aside a few days a week when servicemen aboard a vessel were provided with various forms of entertainment to enjoy.

AHappy Hourlthough the Navy may be where the phrase first came from, it gained popularity in the criminal underworld. When the United States prohibited the sale or consumption of alcohol, speakeasies popped up throughout the country. These private clubs served alcohol to customers displeased with the current law. Oftentimes, these customers were people who would later dine at major public restaurants in the area. At such establishments, no alcohol would be served. As such, “happy hour” referred to a period of time before dinner when speakeasies served alcohol to guests who would later dine at places where it would not be served.

The idea of selling food and drinks at a bargain for happy hour began in the 1960s, when businessmen and women in major cities like New York headed to bars after work to unwind. Now, it’s become a major element of American culture, which any employee can enjoy.
