If you’re attending a funeral service for the first time, it’s common to wonder how to appropriately express your support. Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home has been helping Ranson and Inwood's families honor their loved ones since 1889, and know which gestures of kindness and behaviors are most appropriate. They explain how to follow etiquette and care for those grieving in the guide below.

Funeral Service Etiquette

funeral-services1. Wear Appropriate Attire

An important way to show your respect at a funeral service is to dress appropriately. Wear dark, muted attire, which reflects the atmosphere of mourning. Men may wear a suit or set of dress pants with a shirt and a conservative tie. A sophisticated yet practical skirt and blouse, a dress, or a pair of dress pants is most appropriate for women. Veterans or active duty military may choose to wear a uniform, especially to the funeral of a fellow service member.

2. Gesture Your Respect

Your behavior at a funeral speaks volumes. A serious, quiet tone will express concern for the family and respect for the loved one who has passed. Refrain from loud speech, laughing, or joking at the service, as it’s important to remain solemn.

3. Offer Appropriate Condolences

It’s important to know how to provide the appropriate condolences to your friend or family member. When expressing your sorrow for their loss, a simple “I’m sorry for your loss” is all that is needed. If you’d like to do more, you can offer to help with a specific task, like cooking meals or driving the kids. You can also let them know that you’re there for them when they need you.

It’s important to support those in grief and pay respect to those who have passed. For compassionate funeral services, call Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Ranson, WV, at (304) 725-7068. To learn more about funeral planning and arrangements, visit their website
