If you’ve never owned a gun and you’re unfamiliar with firearms, in general, choosing one to match your purpose, skill level, personality, and budget can be quite confusing. There are so many types of guns using different kinds of ammunition that it could eventually seem like a chore to compare each spec and feature. According to the experts of Northern Security Supply, the premiere “cop shop” in Anchorage, AK, being familiar with the basic gun types is one of the first steps to learning about firearms.

Here are the six basic types of guns available:

  • Revolver: A revolver is a handgun that has a cylinder with several chambers on it, and each chamber can be manually loaded with a bullet. The cylinder rotates, placing a chamber in a position in front of the hammer, which will strike the bullet when the trigger is pulled.

  • Pistol: Pistols are almost the same size as revolvers, but instead of a chamber, it uses a magazine that carries ammunition and is inserted into the the grip.

  • Rifle: A rifle is a longgun firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder. It has grooves inside its barrel which are meant to spin the bullet. This type of gun typically has the highest accuracy.

  • Shotgun: Like the rifle, a shotgun has a long barrel and is fired from the shoulder. The difference is that it has no rifling and it uses shells instead of bullets. These shells contain multiple small projectiles called shot.

  • Machine Gun: A machine gun is a fully automatic firearm. In other words, it will keep on firing in rapid succession as long as there is ammunition and the trigger is being pulled.

  • Submachine Gun: This is a lightweight machine gun which rapidly fires ammunition used in handguns. It can be fired from the shoulder or the hip.

These are the six types of gun you should know about. If you’re looking for a reliable gun store in Anchorage where you can learn more about firearms, contact Northern Security Supply at (907) 561-5602 or visit their website.
