Regular OB-GYN visits are essential to women’s health, but how often should “regular” be? The frequency of which you should see your OB-GYN depends on several factors, including age and personal health. The team at Ogeechee OB-GYN in Statesboro, GA, offers some general guidelines.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists advises women between ages 21 and 29 should have an annual General Women’s Wellness Exam, sometimes called a “Well Woman Visit.” This exam includes a Pap smear and pelvic exam. Women between the ages of 30 and 64 are advised to have an annual pelvic exam, with a Pap smear every other year. Pap tests are essential in detecting abnormal cells and other potential signs of cervical cancer. Via a pelvic exam, your women’s health provider can detect other forms of cancer, diseases of the vulva, and STDs.

OB-GYN If you’re pregnant, you’ll need to visit your OB-GYN more frequently so your doctor can monitor your health and that of the baby. Most women should visit their obstetrician once a month during the first two trimesters. The frequency of your visits will increase as your pregnancy progresses. During the third trimester, your doctor may advise you check in every one to two weeks. After the birth, your obstetrician will likely ask you to come in every few weeks for checkups.

During your annual OB-GYN visits, your women’s health provider can also discuss with you any questions or concerns you have about sexual or reproductive health, including birth control methods and fertility. If you’ve had health problems in the past, such as abnormal cervical cells, cancer, or STDs, your doctor may ask you to come in more than once a year. You should also schedule an appointment right away if you experience any new or unusual symptoms such as irregular or painful menstruation, pelvic pain, or signs of STDs or cancer.
