When it’s time to visit the dentist for a checkup, patients often think of cavities and a new toothbrush. What they may not know is their dentistry team is also the first line of defense against serious conditions, like mouth cancer. Oral cancer can present itself during your examination at the dentist office – that’s why Lorain, OH’s C.R. Sfeir D.D.S., General Dentistry trains every staff member to spot the potential symptoms of this disease, so patients are treated as quickly as possible.

A Dentist’s Guide To Mouth Cancer

What Is Mouth Cancer?

Mouth cancer is found in the oral cavity, including the lips, tongue, inner cheeks, and gums. It can even affect your tonsils and salivary glands. Signs of mouth cancer include lumps, sores that don’t heal, or a white or red patch inside the oral cavity. If you experience mouth ulcers that won’t heal, a thickening in the skin or lining of the mouth, a hoarse voice, or pain in the neck or throat that won’t go away, call your healthcare provider.

How Can You Prevent It?

lorain-oh-dentistPatients at increased risk of mouth cancer include those who use tobacco products, frequently drink alcohol, and those with the human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. To guard yourself against these risk factors, avoid all types of tobacco, especially smokeless tobacco. Limit your alcohol intake, and talk to your doctor about your eligibility for the HPV vaccine.

Men and women with gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, or those who had prior radiation treatment in the head or neck, are also at an increased risk of mouth cancer. You should also avoid a diet of processed foods and too much sun exposure to the lips. Keep your dental checkup appointments; they can help monitor symptoms and consult with you on how to take action.
