Hearty Minnesotans often laugh at their neighbors down south that see their lives come to a standstill after a light dusting of snow. Living in a place that has some of the harshest winters in the United States certainly gives Minnesota drivers plenty of practice guiding vehicles through snow, but often this is when overconfidence sets in.

Stillwater Auto Clinic has seen drivers become overconfident in their winter driving skills. When this happens, the odds of an accident increase, resulting in the need for car repair services. Since they’ve seen the results of these accidents, they understand how to avoid them.

How to Avoid Car Repairs This Winter

Check Tires & Brakes

Ensure your tires are properly inflated, install snow tires, or add chains to avoid skidding. Check your brakes to make sure they’re up for winter driving; this will help to increase stopping time.

Slow Down & Stay Vigilant

Car RepairThe best way to avoid an accident while driving through snow is by slowing down. This seems simple enough, but too often people are in a hurry to get where they’re going. Since it’s routine to drive through snow in this area, drivers’ minds may drift off, or they’ll lose themselves in singing along with the radio. When these distractions set in, your speed may gradually increase without you even knowing it.

Increase Distance Between Vehicles

One of the main principles taught in driver’s education is maintaining a safe distance between vehicles. The “three-second rule” is recommended on a clear and dry surface. This means at least three seconds must go by from when you pass a point that the vehicle in front passed, or you’re following too closely. In snowy conditions, three seconds may not be enough for brakes to properly engage. Allow more distance for other vehicles in snow, at least eight to 10 seconds.
