Engine Fluids & When To Replace Them

Engine Oil

Oil is essential to keeping your engine turning over because it keeps the parts lubricated. That’s why it’s important to change your oil regularly. The common recommendation is to change it every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but you should check your owner’s manual to figure out what your specific car requires. You can check your oil levels between changes by checking your oil dipstick. If your dipstick shows oil below the ideal level, you should have it changed immediately.

Transmission Fluid

Similar to oil, transmission fluid keeps your gears lubricated, allowing your engine to disperse torque efficiently. Transmission fluid levels shouldn’t change, but the quality of the fluid does degrade. You can check the quality of the fluid by pulling the transmission dipstick and feeling the oil between your fingers. If it looks burnt or has particles in it, it could be time for a change. The general rule is every 50,000 to 100,000 miles, but check your manual for your specific car.

Coolant

Coolant runs through your radiator to keep your engine from overheating. You can check it by removing the radiator cap when the car is off and hasn’t been driven in a while. You do not want to do this while the car is hot. If it doesn’t reach the minimum coolant level line, you should top it off as soon as possible. This will likely need to be done every two to three years.
