Nevada winters can bring drastic and ever changing weather conditions, creating driving hazards such as poor visibility, black ice, and even avalanche prone roads. At Kidwell & Gallagher LTD, our trusted Elko accident attorneys want you to be careful on the roads. We also want you to feel safe in the knowledge that if you get into a car wreck, we are here to protect you.

3 Winter Driving Safety Tips

The Nevada Department of Transportation workinjury lawyers hard to clear the roadways for safe winter travel. Unfortunately, due to the swift and dramatic climate changes Nevada is known for, it can be difficult for NDOT to anticipate every dangerous road condition. However, with these three tips from our accident attorneys, you can be prepared and stay safe on the winter roads:

1. Travel Smart

Before going driving, check the road conditions by dialing 511 or logging on to www.nvroads.com. When weather conditions are poor, only go out when you have to. If you do have somewhere to be, give yourself plenty of time to safely reach your destination. Plan your route ahead of time to avoid snowy passages, icy areas, and steep hills. Always share your itinerary with others so that they know when to expect you, and where to look for you should you fail to show up.

2. Be Prepared

Many accidents occur because the driver was ill-prepared for the weather conditions. Before leaving your house, check to make sure that you have chains for your tires, extra windshield wipers, a full tank of gas, and that your fluid levels are all good. Additionally, double check to make sure that your lights, brakes, heater, battery, radiator, belts, and hoses are all in good working condition. Finally, pack some extra blankets, water and food, and some flares just in case you should go into a snow bank or off the road.

3. Prevent An Accident

While our injury lawyers understand that they’re called “accidents” for a reason, there are safety measures that you can take to prevent causing an accident yourself. For starters, remove any snow and ice from your vehicle before you leave your driveway. Place your cellphone in the glove compartment or in a bag in the back seat, that way you are not tempted to use it while driving. If you plan on drinking, designate a driver, or anticipate staying the night at your host’s house.

When out on the roads, follow proper driving protocol, such as making sure your lights are on, maintaining a safe speed and keeping a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
