Each month, the collector car experts from Charlotte AutoFair feature a specific vehicle worthy of attention. This month, they’re all about the 1950 Mercury Eight Monterey. With a stint in Hollywood, this luxury cruiser is the star at every auto show. The first models rolled out of the factory to compete with the hardtop coupes being produced by General Motors, and in 1986, one caught the attention of Hollywood movie producers.

The 1950 Mercury Monterey Makes Its On-Screen Debut

auto showThe 1986 film Cobra starring Sylvester Stallone told the story of a tough street cop tasked with protecting the only surviving witness to a murderous cult. He needed a way to get around in style, and the 1950 Mercury Eight Monterey fit the bill. The legendary collector car was featured in the movie, and it also served as Stallone’s personal set of wheels. He kept the car until it was stolen out of his garage in 1994. The actor was reunited with the Cobra car in 2009, when he found it at an auto auction. It’s estimated to be worth more than $250,000.

A Collector Car Mixed With Luxury

First and foremost, the Monterey is a big-body coupe built for luxury. It was introduced as a high-end model as part of the Mercury Eight Series. Leather-faced seats, wool carpets, and chrome-plated interior moldings gave passengers a smooth and comfortable ride. The two-door coupe was a statement of wealth and style. With a nice paint job, it rolls down the street turning heads and demands attention everywhere it goes.
