‘Tis the season to be jolly, and what better way to show it than with a beautiful smile?  With family gatherings and aunts and cousins sending you fruitcakes, there will be plenty of holiday goodies that may affect your teeth.

Here are a few Christmas dental tips to keep your mouth clean and jolly this holiday season!

1.  Brush your teeth for at least two minutes.  Make sure you take the time to brush your teeth for at least two minutes after you eat, and do a thorough job to make sure you get rid of anything stuck in between them.

2.  Brush your teeth lightly.  A lot of people believe that brushing harder helps get your teeth cleaner.  This is simply not true and actually can be harmful to your teeth and gums.  Brush your teeth and your gums at a 45-degree angle, and don’t press too hard!

3.  Avoid these holiday treats.  With all the gumdrops and candy canes around, it may be difficult to avoid these temptations.  Try to stay away from too may sugary treats, carbonated sodas and even wine.  These foods and drinks have tons of acid in them and can be harmful to your teeth.  If you do decide to have a few indulgences, make sure you rinse your mouth with water afterwards and brush your teeth if possible.

4.  Keep yourself hydrated.  Drink plenty of water during this holiday season.  This will be very beneficial to your mouth because it will flush away bacteria that may be accumulating.

5.  Don’t open any presents with your teeth. Sometimes children or even adults can get really excited to open gifts as quickly as possible. Do not open anything with your teeth.  This is an easy way to chip or break a tooth, and it will make the rest of your Christmas holiday a little less jolly and a little more humbug.

Following the Christmas tips will help keep your teeth healthy this holiday season and keep you smiling bright into the New Year.  If you have any questions or would like to set up a free consultation please contact us.
