This past weekend we gathered, as the employees of LeVeck Lighting and with our spouses, to celebrate the season of Christmas. Each year we come together to share dinner, play games, and fellowship out of the office setting.
This year it was the recognition of a wonderfully successful year. As we enjoyed the games, the food, and the camaraderie with one another, I reflected on how much we had grown over the past year and it made me ponder the question…Why?
Of course we could contribute it to high sales, new partnerships in the facility maintenance world, or some other aspect of the “business” side. But as I look out at this wonderful “family” that I work with, I am confident it is about the people.
The benefits of a small business is the ability to truly engage with co-workers. At LeVeck Lighting Products, Inc., our mission and values are easy to articulate and you can see our employees exemplify these values every day. Because we work side by side with the owners, it promotes the spirit of family and in turn it often creates a positive energy of camaraderie during projects and even more so during tough times. I truly believe this environment at LeVeck has had a direct impact on our sales department, our technicians and our office staff. We all have a feeling of being personally important to the company.
Another feature that we have, unlike large corporations, everybody does everything. It gives us all an opportunity to have some variety, as well as develop new skills. You might call it “cross-training” I like to think of it as giving a helping hand to your fellow workers. We have all had to wear a different hat at some point in time and we have in turn embraced the challenges, appreciated our jobs, or become more cognizant of what someone else is dealing with daily. This also gives us a great sense of trust. Trust that we will do our best no matter what hat we are wearing. Trust that we can accomplish our jobs makes is one emotional attribute that makes us want to be more engaged at work.
And of course, communication. As a small business with many personalities, it is not always easy. But, we have been able to do it successfully because the owners listen on a regular basis. The owners and managers meet with the office staff and sales department weekly, one on one, to determine goals, offer support, and listen.
Where else can you get a job that invests so much in their employees?
What are the results? A great place to work. A group of people that genuinely care, like family. Better relationships with our customers. A company that operates with integrity in all they do, and it is apparent to those from the outside.
This is the kind of company we are at LeVeck Lighting Products, Inc.
How about you? What do you do to engage your employees?
