Motorcyclists only have two wheels on the ground, which makes actively monitoring the quality of your tires critical for safe riding. Because motorcycle tires are so variable, with several different factors influencing their wear and performance, they require quite a bit more attention than the tires on your car.

According to Beechmont Motorsport, one of Cincinnati's leading motorcycle stores, your tires may last anywhere from 2,000 to 10,000 miles, depending on:

  • motorcycle storeThe Type Of Tire: Softer racing and touring tires provide more traction, but generally wear out more quickly. Sport-touring and touring tires, on the other hand, are much harder, so they often last 10 times as long.
  • Your Riding Style: The faster and harder you ride, the more quickly your tires will wear out. If you want to get as much out of your tires as possible, avoid braking suddenly and try to start off as smoothly as possible.
  • Where You Ride: Motorcycle tires are much more responsive to the environment than those on your car or truck. For example, city riding will cause your tires to wear more evenly, but a lot of highway miles will flatten and square off the tire in the middle. In severe situations, squared-off tires can seriously impact the handling of your bike and make it slow to turn.
  • Accidental Damage: Even brand-new tires can suffer punctures from road damage or curb strikes. While some damage can be repaired with a kit from your local motorcycle store, you should never hesitate to simply replace a tire if it can't be easily fixed.
  • The Age Of Your Tire: After a few years, the rubber in your tires will start to degrade, so it's best to replace them even if you rarely ride. In general, you should get new tires every five years, even if the tread is still good.
